Croom Medical Partners with Global Advanced Metals to Present Breakthrough Tantalum Additive Manufacturing at OMTEC 2023

Limerick, Ireland – June 8, 2023

Croom Medical, a trusted leader in orthopaedic contract manufacturing, is pleased to collaborate with Global Advanced Metals (GAM) for the highly anticipated Orthopaedic Manufacturing & Technology Exposition and Conference (OMTEC) taking place on June 14-15 in Chicago.

The collaboration between Croom Medical and GAM aims to showcase their cutting-edge Tantalum (Ta) based medical device Additive Manufacturing capability. Croom Medical’s deep expertise in additive manufacturing combined with GAM’s high-grade tantalum powder ensures that unique structures and devices can be created that exhibit exceptional performance results.

Additive Manufacturing offers numerous advantages over traditional subtractive manufacturing processes. By utilizing less material and enabling the production of complex, lightweight part geometries, Additive Manufacturing presents opportunities for rapid prototyping and manufacturing higher performing medical implants. These benefits are expected to significantly reduce surgery revisions, minimizing patient discomfort and unnecessary costs.

While the use of tantalum in Additive Manufacturing applications is relatively new, tantalum has long been a proven material for in-vivo surgical devices, including surgical staples, dental implants, and hip and knee implants. Tantalum devices have demonstrated superior bio-integration and reduced risk of toxicity, preventing bone resorption and mitigating stress shielding, which can lead to implant loosening. By leveraging Additive Manufacturing technology, Croom Medical and GAM aim to produce intricate, porous, strong, and lightweight structures for contract manufacturing customers.

Headquartered in Limerick, Ireland, Croom Medical boasts nearly four decades of experience providing exceptional outsourced manufacturing services to medical device original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). In recent years, Croom has made significant investments in Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology, collaborating with esteemed academic and state-sponsored institutions. Their dedication has resulted in the successful manufacturing of over 20,000 devices using AM technology.

Global Advanced Metals (GAM), based in Massachusetts, USA, brings over 70 years of innovation and manufacturing expertise in high-grade tantalum powders for various applications, including electronics. GAM’s recent development of spheroidized tantalum powder, a critical form for “printing” tantalum parts, has further enhanced their capabilities in the field.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with Global Advanced Metals at OMTEC, one of the premier events in the orthopaedic industry,” said Patrick Byrnes, CEO of Croom Medical. “By harnessing our combined strengths and resources, we can deliver customized solutions that precisely address the unique needs of our OEM customers.”

During the exhibition on Thursday, June 15, from 9:00 am to 9:15 am, Shane Keaveney, R&D Manager at Croom Medical, will present “A Next-Generation Material for Medical Devices: Tantalum,” shedding light on the exciting possibilities tantalum offers in the medical field.

Croom Medical and GAM will also host one-on-one consultations at booth #116 throughout the event, providing attendees with an in-depth understanding of their ground-breaking offerings. This collaboration lays the foundation for future joint projects and initiatives that promise to reshape the industry.
