Croom Medical Brings Patient-Specific Implant Manufacturing In-House: Finished Implants in Weeks, Not Months

Croom Medical manufactures patient-specific orthopaedic implants in titanium, cobalt chrome and tantalum, produced to the OEM’s design entirely in-house, with finished implants delivered in weeks rather than months.

Croom, Co. Limerick, Ireland. June 2026. Croom Medical is now manufacturing patient-specific implants (PSI) for orthopaedic OEMs, built to the OEM’s design entirely in-house. Because every step happens under one roof, with no external queues and no hand-offs between suppliers, Croom Medical delivers a finished, inspected implant in weeks rather than the months a multi-supplier route typically takes.

A patient-specific implant is tied to one patient and, often, one scheduled surgery, so turnaround is a clinical necessity, not a preference. A conventional route sends a design out to a printer, then on to separate machining and finishing suppliers, with queue time and shipping at every step. Croom Medical collapses that into a single site on one quality system.

The work is build-to-print: the design, IP and regulatory authority stay with the OEM. Croom Medical manufactures to that design and provides the manufacturing documentation OEMs need to support their regulatory submission.

The approach suits complex, low-volume devices where geometry and fixation matter, such as talus ankle implants, acetabular cups, interbody cages and revision cones.

Patient-specific implants, built on processes proven at volume

The PSI capability runs on the same certifications, processes and quality culture Croom Medical uses to deliver implants at production scale. With 40 years of orthopaedic manufacturing behind it, the company produces more than 250,000 knee systems a year from an ISO 13485:2016 certified, FDA-registered facility. It has operated in additive manufacturing since around 2010, building a dedicated R&D and engineering team that remains actively involved in research, and has produced over 60,000 additive-manufactured implants to date.

That depth shows in the detail. Each material runs in its own segregated environment, one material per dedicated machine, to control cross-contamination. Validated L-PBF processing covers Ti-6Al-4V Grade 23 and cobalt chrome, with tantalum capability delivered through Croom Medical’s TALOS™ platform. Through Biofuse™, its recently launched lattice technology, OEMs can draw directly on Croom Medical’s design expertise to develop porous ingrowth structures, tuning porosity, pore size and strut architecture to the target anatomy.

That capability is also expanding. Croom Medical recently announced ACOT, the Advanced Centre of Orthopaedic Technologies under construction at its Limerick campus, which will bring further capacity and finishing capability in-house and make the company more vertically integrated still.

Patrick Byrnes, Chief Executive Officer of Croom Medical, said: “Patient-specific projects rewards speed and control, and that is exactly what our vertically integrated model is built for. Bringing this capability in-house is a natural extension of 40 years of orthopaedic manufacturing and more than a decade in additive. We are well placed to support OEMs taking on patient-specific programmes, and we look forward to working with them on it.”
